About the role

VoteAmerica seeks a Senior Director of Fundraising to develop and execute upon a comprehensive fundraising and donor relations strategy. If you’re the right fit for this role, you’ll have extensive professional experience in securing gifts, identifying and pursuing grant opportunities, and cultivating donor relationships — and you'll be passionate about leveraging your skills towards our mission.

This role is an exciting strategic opportunity to target and secure everything from 4- to 7+-figure investments toward the critical cause of fixing American democracy. If it has to do with incoming gifts to our organization, you're driving it across the finish line. And if you’re our next Senior Director of Fundraising, you’ll be highly motivated about this important challenge, recognizing the urgency of the moment.

VoteAmerica uses technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy. As our Senior Director of Fundraising, you will be charged with stewarding democracy-minded donors and corporate partners around our nonpartisan mission and strategy. You won’t work alone, though: you’ll be collaborating closely with our CEO and leadership team. Plus, you’ll have existing assets to get you started, including VoteAmerica’s base of existing donor relationships and expansive networks.

FYI: this role will also compliantly fundraise on behalf of VoteAmerica Action Fund, VoteAmerica’s sister c4 entity which leverages express advocacy and legal action, when needed, to defend voting rights in key states.

Your day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Report to — and engage in a close working relationship with — the CEO
  • Develop and execute upon comprehensive, long-term fundraising strategies, including major gifts, online and in-person
  • Manage all aspects of donor pipeline development, from prospecting to relationship building and stewardship
  • Identify key grant opportunities, then successfully navigate application processes
  • Identify and secure corporate partnerships, in collaboration with the CEO
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with a large portfolio of VoteAmerica donors, while assisting the CEO in doing the same as needed
  • Create fundraising forecasts and projections, and routinely conduct data-driven analyses and reporting on overall performance of fundraising efforts against goals and objectives
  • Conceptualize and oversee virtual and in-person fundraising events
  • Serve as an internal and external thought leader on nonprofit fundraising, continuously learning and implementing the latest trends, tactics, and advancements in the field
  • Serve as a thought partner with VoteAmerica leadership in developing messaging, strategy, and programs

You’ll succeed in this role if you’re:

  • A hungry go-getter who sets, chases down, and measures success against ambitious fundraising goals
  • A people person who genuinely enjoys building and maintaining relationships and community
  • Deeply troubled about American democracy and threats to voter suppression — and motivated to fix it
  • Organized, data-driven, and analytical — yet fast-moving, agile, and adaptive
  • Entrepreneurial and willing to embrace challenges and identify creative new opportunities
  • Someone who can solve problems collaboratively
  • A gifted storyteller with exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • A strategic thinker who can turn long-term goals into concrete and immediate steps
  • An optimist (we know that things are unnerving right now, but democracy is meant to be iterative and we can get back on track!)
  • A deeply ethical person, who models integrity, compliance, stewardship, and accountability in equal measure

Your skills and experience:

  • 5+ years director-level or higher fundraising experience, with progressively responsible and accountable positions
  • Experience working directly with senior leadership at an organization
  • Strong background managing all aspects of fundraising including high net-worth individuals, institutional giving, corporate giving and online contributions
  • Experience closely collaborating with digital, events, and marketing teams for online and in-person fundraising efforts
  • Proficient in Hubspot and/or Salesforce (or a comparable gift-tracking system)
  • A track record building and nurturing long-term funding relationships and a verified track record of closing 4- to 7+-figure gifts
  • Excellent writing skills, including demonstrated ability to draft long-term strategic plans and annual reports
  • Permission to live & work in the U.S

Bonus points if you:

  • Have worked for a nonpartisan nonprofit in social impact, democracy, political, or voting rights spaces
  • Deeply understand the intersection of technology and activism
  • Have experience working remotely (and you loved it!)
  • Care deeply about working with, within, and on behalf of women, BIPOC, low-income, and LGBT communities
  • Have experience managing teams and/or are willing to learn and grow as a leader at VoteAmerica
